You can also connect or disconnect a device from the Bus without causing it any problems. The import of this is that if one device on the N2K network goes down or starts babbling on the network it doesn't take all the other devices down with it. The architecture is laid out so that devices are attached to the main bus, but the bus does NOT pass through them, except in certain special cases it is not "daisy chained" from one device to the next. There is NO controller, every device talks and every device listens. your N2K Depth Display will listen to every "Depth" message, but ignore all the GPS Postion messages, wind messages, etc.

NMEA 2000 represents a standard set of "messages" that contain data. Depending on the power needs of the device it may or may not draw power from the bus or require its own supply. This is usually an N2K connection, or should work as one.Īll devices talk into a common, powered bus. You may occasionally see something referred to as "CAN" on a marine device Furuno does this for example. CANBus as a technology has been around in cars since the 80's it is not particularly fast but it is fast enough, and faster than NMEA 0183 and far more flexible and easy to configure. A device which is "NMEA 2000" has supposedly passed tests to conform to the communication standards AND a license of some sort has been paid. NMEA 2000 is a re-packaging of CANBus (Controller Area Network) branded and licensed by NMEA for use in marine applications.
